VEGGIE SWAP

SUNDAYS 6/23-9/15

3PM-5PM

1ST NATIONAL BANK OF SCOTIA PARKING LOT

The Schenectady Farm Bureau knows that agriculture in our community is as much about backyard gardens, maple syrup and bees as it is about large dairy and grain farms. As a result, your Farm Bureau will be sponsoring a weekly Sunday afternoon vegetable swap this summer. Backyard gardeners, bee-keepers, home canners and bakers are all invited to come meet their neighbors, barter, and help us celebrate the personal side of Schenectady County agriculture.

We are encouraging barter ? this is not a market and cash deals are discouraged. We will ask for a small donation ($1/day) to help defray insurance and other expenses. Our host, the 1st National Bank of Scotia is graciously donating use of their parking lot. Farm Bureau members will direct traffic, but extra help is always appreciated.

Why a swap? We hope to encourage small scale gardeners and others to share their crops, expand their horizons, reduce food waste, maybe pick up some tips and encouragement, and build community among the gardeners, orchardists, backyard brewers and bee/chicken keepers among us.

The swap will take place at the 1st National Bank of Scotia parking lot (Mohawk Avenue) on Sundays ? June 23rd to September 15th, from 3 to 5 PM. Water (at the Bank) and bathrooms (thank you Stewarts) will be available. We ask that participants bring their own tables and containers. Participants will be asked to sign in and complete a simple liability waiver.

The County Food Bank will also be at the swap to collect donations of excess produce. We look forward to helping the less fortunate in our community. Any unusable produce will be collected for the Biosoil Farm worm-powered composting operation.

Please remember that this is a swap, not a farmer?s market. The goals are sharing, learning, and building community. So come trade squash, sip cider, and meet a beekeeper. Bring the kids and the dog too!
